Von der Leyen & Zelensky Say “Peace Must Be Won” Before Washington Trip

Ursula von der Leyen stressed that “peace must be won by force” during a Brussels briefing with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, while announcing a 19th sanctions package against Russia.

The European Commission is finalising the 19th sanctions package against Russia, announced by EU President Ursula von der Leyen. On 17 August, she met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Brussels, and tomorrow she will fly to Washington to meet U.S. President Donald Trump and other coalition leaders.

Ukrainian Decision-Making and EU Support

During the press conference following their bilateral meeting, von der Leyen emphasized that Ukraine must be able to decide its future, and assured that EU states will support the country until a just and lasting peace is achieved.

Security Guarantees for Ukraine

The Commission President also underscored the need to provide Ukraine with security guarantees, so it remains a “behemoth, difficult to swallow for foreign forces.”
