On Monday, 22 December, the Warsaw Regional Prosecutor’s Office filed an indictment against former Orlen CEO Daniel Obajtek in the Warsaw Śródmieście District Court.
Indictment Filed
The Warsaw Regional Prosecutor’s Office submitted a file of indictment against former Orlen president Daniel Obajtek to the Warsaw Śródmieście District Court on 22 December.
Allegations of Misuse of Authority
Obajtek is charged with abusing his position between July and December 2021, when he was Orlen’s board chairman, by misusing company assets for personal benefit.
Contracts with Detective Services
Investigators found that Obajtek directed Zbigniew L. to enter two agreements with Wojciech K., a detective, totaling 393,600 PLN, without a competitive bidding process.
Prosecutor’s Assessment
The prosecutor stated the contracts aimed to gather information on the lifestyle and assets of opposition politicians, rather than serve Orlen’s economic or security interests, and that Obajtek caused a financial loss of 393,600 PLN to Orlen.
Media Probe into Orlen’s Use of Investigators
Journalist Mariusz Gierszewski reported that during Obajtek’s tenure Orlen patronised two detective firms founded by former ABW and SKW officials, allegedly targeting opposition figures such as KGHM’s former CEO and former Warsaw vice president, and possibly members of the ruling party, the Law and Justice ministers, including former asset minister Jacek Sasin.
