A 34‑year‑old man drowned in the “Pacific” water tank in Częstochowa after leaping into the water to escape police. Officers suspected him and two other men of a car theft.
Police Investigate Car Theft in Częstochowa
On Sunday, 17 August, before noon, police received a report from a 56‑year‑old pilgrim from the Masovian Voivodeship. He claimed he was attacked, struck several times in the head, and then had his key fob and a Skoda car stolen. Officers immediately began operations and traced a lead that could point to the perpetrators.
Suspects Arrested; Third Attempts to Escape
After a few hours, around 22:30, patrol officers in Lisiniec Park spotted the stolen Skoda. Two men were nearby and were arrested; both were found to be under the influence of alcohol. A few moments later, officers heard splash in the water when the third suspect, who had previously tried to hide among bushes, leapt into the “Pacific” tank and ignored instructions to remain on the shore. The arrested men admitted that he was their acquaintance.
34‑Year‑Old Dies in Tragic Rescue
Because of the night conditions and dense foliage, authorities called the fire department. The 34‑year‑old was retrieved from the water, but medical rescue was needed. Despite extensive resuscitation, he could not be saved. The victim was a resident of the Łódź Voivodeship. The 42‑year‑old and his 45‑year‑old companion were taken the police station; as they were fully intoxicated (about 2.5‰ alcohol), further actions will take place once they sober up.
