Building Fire in Józefów: 40 Evacuated, Residents Displaced

Incident Details

On Saturday, January 17, 2026, at approximately 12:45, a fire broke out in an apartment building at Fabryczna Street in Józefów, Warsaw West County. A total of 40 people, including 11 children, were evacuated, and one person was hospitalized.

According to Lt. Capt. Damian Dolniak of the County Fire Service, 11 fire brigades were present at the peak of the incident, including an operational officer. The fire originated on the staircase and was subsequently localized.

Evacuation and Injuries

Some residents evacuated independently via the staircase or windows, while others received assistance using ladders. A serious incident occurred during evacuation when a 16-year-old girl fell from the first floor, suffering leg and spinal injuries.

Seven people were treated by medical teams, with the injured teenager transported to the hospital. Firefighters set up a heated tent for shelter and warmth near the scene.

Response and Assistance

The emergency response included 11 fire brigades, police, and three medical teams, with municipal police and crisis management also present. The affected building was a two-story communal structure with wooden elements.

Residents couldn’t return to their apartments. A bus was arranged for transportation to temporary shelter. Vice-Mayor Dariusz Skarżyński coordinated assistance, including a heated tent with beds and hot tea. Some were accommodated at the “Willa Wiosenna” hotel, others with families.

Aftermath

Firefighters have taken the building out of service. The district building inspector is scheduled to conduct inspections, while police investigate the cause of the fire.
