Zelenski Responds to Trump’s Peace Council Initiative

Ukrainian President Zelenski comments on Trump’s Peace Council initiative, expressing skepticism about joint participation with Russia.

Zelenski on the Peace Council

Ukrainian President confirmed that his country has received an invitation to join the Peace Council being created by the American president. Donald Trump would like the body to work on establishing peace in the Gaza Strip.

The US president invited about 60 world leaders to participate in the Council, including the leaders of Belarus and Russia. Zelenski called the proposal unrealistic for joint participation of Kyiv and Moscow, stating it’s hard to imagine Ukraine and Russia sitting at the same table. He referred to Russia as an aggressor and Belarus as a key ally.

Warsaw with an invitation from Trump

Among those invited to participate in the Peace Council is the President of Poland. Talks with Americans about joining the initiative are scheduled to take place in the near future.

Trump aims to approve his project during a special ceremony at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday, January 22nd. Commentators assess that the Council appears to be an attempt to create a Trump-dominated alternative to the UN.

The statute raises concerns due to broad powers granted to Trump and a $1 billion membership fee for permanent membership. Non-permanent membership would not involve costs and would last for three years.

Zelenski did not go to Davos

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski did not attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, though he noted he might go if documents regarding peace in Ukraine can be established and signed with Americans.

Zelenski stated that meetings with Americans should end with concrete results to strengthen Ukraine or bring the war closer to an end. He emphasized that prosperity plans and security guarantees for Ukraine are two very important documents that are in their final stages of development.

The Ukrainian President said he would travel to Davos if agreements are reached regarding energy packages for Ukraine or additional air defense meetings and decisions.
