Poland is shipping several hundred generators of various types to Kyiv and surrounding areas, according to Polish chargé d’affaires Piotr Łukasiewicz. The generators come from government reserves.
Kyiv Faces Severe Energy Crisis
With strong frosts persisting in Ukraine, approximately half of Kyiv’s residential buildings lack heating or electricity due to repeated Russian attacks on energy infrastructure. In other buildings, heating systems operate weakly and intermittently, causing indoor temperatures to drop below 10°C. This makes daily functioning difficult, especially at night, compounded by frequent power outages. “Points of resilience” are being opened in the capital for warmth and phone charging.
Ukraine Widespread Power Outages
On the night of January 21–22, Russia attacked Ukraine with about 100 drones and an Iskander ballistic missile. Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that around 4,000 buildings in Kyiv remained without heating by midday January 21, and nearly 60% of the capital lacked electricity. He stressed the need for additional repair teams and resources. Ukrainian authorities note hundreds of thousands have left Kyiv due to power and heating shortages. Difficult conditions also persist in Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
Infrastructure Damage Worsens Crisis
Repeated drone and rocket attacks on Ukraine’s power production and transmission systems cause nationwide blackouts. In Kyiv, prolonged water shutdowns have led to frozen pipes and heating system failures in some buildings.
