Polish President Nawrocki criticized the foreign ministry’s handling of his Peace Council invite at Davos, referencing a satirical sketch and agreeing with Donald Tusk.
Nawrocki’s Skepticism on Foreign Ministry
During a press conference in Davos on January 22, President Karol Nawrocki expressed disappointment with Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MSZ) response to his invitation to the Peace Council. He stated he expected more from the MSZ, particularly given the shifting global geopolitics and the emergence of a new international organization. Nawrocki then referenced a satirical sketch by Wojciech Mann and Krzysztof Materna, saying he immediately thought of it upon receiving the opinion from a deputy head of an MSZ department.
Where Was Donald Tusk Correct?
Nawrocki agreed with Prime Minister Donald Tusk that the coordination between the MSZ and the Presidential Chancellery (KPRP) regarding the Peace Council was “not entirely serious.” He confirmed the KPRP received only one formal document – the MSZ opinion. However, Nawrocki acknowledged direct, informal contact with Tusk, stating: “Premier Donald Tusk is correct: we maintained direct contact, albeit informal.” He emphasized the natural necessity for the president and government to align on security matters.
Did Peace Council Issue Force Cooperation?
Following Donald Trump’s invitation to Nawrocki for the Peace Council, Tusk reminded Poland that joining an international organization requires government approval and parliamentary ratification. The KPRP requested an MSZ opinion. MSZ spokesperson Maciej Wewiór confirmed the ministry’s response was sent to the KPRP on Tuesday at 4:56 PM. Marcin Przydacz, head of the President’s International Policy Office, later described the MSZ’s response received “after several days” as a “few-sentence statement” merely calling the initiative “interesting.”.
