Nawrocki: Russia Will Remain a Threat to Europe, Regardless of Peace Deal

Polish President Karol Nawrocki warns in U.S. media that Russia will persist as an existential threat to Europe, irrespective of any Ukraine peace accord.

Russia’s Persistent Threat

President Nawrocki expressed no doubt about Moscow’s future intentions. He stated that whether a peace treaty with Ukraine is signed or not, Russia will remain a threat to Europe and will likely attack other nations. He emphasized this danger concerns the entire continent, particularly NATO’s eastern flank states.

“Unquestionably, regardless of whether peace with Ukraine is signed or not, Russia will remain a threat to Europe. I think it will continue to attack other countries,” Nawrocki declared.

Poland in a Hybrid War

Speaking to CNBC, the President highlighted that Poland is already experiencing hybrid warfare. He pointed to activities in the Baltic Sea, pressure on Polish borders, attacks on infrastructure, and violations of Polish airspace as evidence. “Poland is a NATO eastern flank state, and we in Poland also experience the consequences of the war in Ukraine,” Nawrocki noted.

He underscored the importance of security investments over actions leading to uncontrolled escalation. “We must prepare by accumulating arms, increasing our defensive capabilities, and building solidarity. Conflict with Russia is possible in the near future,” he added, urging Europe to focus on real threats instead of ideological issues.

NATO and U.S. Pressure

Regarding transatlantic relations, Nawrocki acknowledged the pressure from Donald Trump on European allies to increase defense spending. He stated that strong NATO is impossible without U.S. engagement, which funds 65% of the alliance’s defense budget to maintain Europe’s and the world’s security.

“Poland, Finland, the Baltic states, and the eastern flank NATO states feel responsible for collective security. We are not just recipients but also providers of security. This is what Donald Trump believes – Europe must build its own security, buy military equipment, because war is around the corner,” Nawrocki said.

Prevention Over Reconstruction

President Nawrocki concluded with a clear call: “It is better to spend money on preparations for war and preventing war than to spend money on rebuilding after war.”

Trump’s Take on Peace Talks

Also in Davos, U.S. President Donald Trump shared his views on peace negotiations, citing emotions as the main obstacle. “There is immense hatred between President Zelenskyy and President Putin. That’s not good. It’s not good for agreements,” Trump stated.

“There is an abnormal hatred. Bearing that in mind, I think Russia wants to make a deal. I think Ukraine wants to make a deal, and we will try to make one. If they fail to do so, they are stupid,” Trump concluded.
