Trump Claims “Permanent” Greenland Agreement; Media: No Documents Exist

Trump on “Permanent” Greenland Deal

On Thursday, January 22, Donald Trump spoke with journalists aboard Air Force One during his return from Davos to Washington. The American president stated that the Greenland agreement would be valid “forever.” Reporters asked what actions Americans would be able to take after the agreement is signed.

“We can conduct military operations, we can do whatever we want. This is in the negotiation process, we’ll see what happens. I think it will be good,” said Trump, cited among others by “Kyiv Post.”

USA to Receive Full Access to Greenland

In a conversation with Fox Business Network, Trump repeated that the agreement regarding Greenland has no time limit. He added that the United States will receive “essentially full access” to the island. According to Trump, this agreement is a significant success in the field of security.

Verbal Agreement Between Trump and Rutte

CNN reported that no documents have been prepared yet regarding the Greenland agreement. The station conveyed that the arrangements between Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte are exclusively verbal, which has caused confusion among members of the North Atlantic Alliance.

According to CNN information, a document detailing the terms of the agreement will be developed at the next working group meeting with the participation of the USA, Denmark, and Greenland. It was established that this could happen next week in Washington.

Update of Agreement Between USA, Denmark and Greenland

Issues related to the presence of American troops in Greenland are regulated by the 1951 agreement between the USA, Denmark, and Greenland. CNN conveyed that Trump and Rutte had agreed to further talks about updating this agreement.

The new agreement is to strengthen NATO’s role in Greenland and ensure that Russia and China are excluded from any investments on the island.
