As a second wave of frost descends on Warsaw, with temperatures expected to plummet to -21°C, the city is deploying heated tents and free buses to support the homeless.
Weather Forecast
A second wave of severe frost is approaching Warsaw, with nights expected to drop to around -21°C, and locally even to approximately -23°C, increasing the risk of hypothermia. Forecasts indicate the coldest temperatures will be the night from Sunday, February 1st, to Monday, February 2nd, with sub-zero temperatures persisting during the day at the start of the week.
Heated Tents for the Homeless
In response to the forecasted drop in temperatures, the city is activating heated shelters at transport hubs. By decision of the Mayor of Warsaw, the State Fire Service will deploy five heated tents offering hot drinks. The tents will operate from Saturday to Monday, 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, at five specific locations, including Centrum metro station and Rondo Wiatraczna.
Free Heated Bus Service
The Municipal Transport Authority is launching two free heated buses, “OGRZEJ SIĘ” (Warm Up), from Friday, January 30th, running from 6:00 PM through the night. Line A will loop through central areas, while Line B will connect the Praga districts and the vicinity of the Eastern Station. Some stops along the routes will be ‘on request’.
Support for the Homeless
During severe frosts, key support is provided to individuals experiencing homelessness. Reports of vulnerable people can be made to the Municipal Guard at 986, or information on shelters and aid can be obtained via the 24-hour hotline 987. For life-threatening situations, dial 112. Municipal guards and social workers monitor areas where people stay, offering warm soup and clothing to those who refuse shelters. The city’s “A Little Warmth for the Homeless” campaign also provides aid through patrols.
Winter Maintenance and Public Safety
The City Hall warns of the danger of falling icicles and snow overhangs from roofs and balconies during severe frosts and thaws, advising people to avoid walking directly beneath them and to heed warning signs. Winter maintenance responsibilities are shared among several entities, including the City Cleaning Authority, property managers, and district offices. The Municipal Guard conducts inspections to ensure compliance, reporting 4,519 inspections from January 1-28, which led to court applications, fines, and reprimands.
