A new survey reveals overwhelming support among Polish voters for making prosecutors financially responsible for their mistakes, regardless of political affiliation.
Majority Backs Financial Responsibility for Prosecutors
A majority of Poles support introducing financial responsibility for prosecutors for errors committed, according to the latest IBRiS survey conducted for “Rzeczpospolita.” 67.1% of respondents agree with this approach, while 19.8% oppose it, and 13% have no opinion.
Strong Bipartisan Support
39.7% of respondents strongly support the proposal, with an additional 27.4% somewhat supporting it. Opponents constitute a clear minority, with only 2.6% strongly against and 17.2% somewhat against.
The survey shows surprising agreement across political lines. Support is highest among Confederation voters at 80%, followed closely by Civic Coalition voters at 75% and Law and Justice voters at 73%. Support is lower among New Left voters (50%) and former Third Way voters (39%).
State Budget Bears Cost of Ineffective Regulations
Although current regulations theoretically allow for pursuing compensation claims against prosecutors, in practice this mechanism barely functions. As a result, the state budget bears the financial consequences of errors made during proceedings.
“Rz” reports that compensation paid for unlawful temporary arrests and detentions in Poland in 2024 alone amounted to nearly 8.7 million zlotys.
