Tragedy in Kampinos National Park: One Person Dead, Two Hospitalized After Family Gets Lost on Walk

Three family members got lost in Kampinos National Park during a walk; one died despite resuscitation efforts, while two others were hospitalized.

The Incident

A walk in Kampinos National Park on Saturday ended tragically for three individuals. At approximately 17:50, services received a report about people missing in the Truskaw area (Warsaw West County). During the operation, all three were found, but despite resuscitation efforts, a 57-year-old woman could not be saved. The other two individuals were taken to the hospital.

Initial findings indicate that two women aged 30 and 57, along with a 35-year-old man, had gone for a walk. During the hike, the 57-year-old lost consciousness. At that point, the 30-year-old woman ventured deeper into the forest to seek help.

Search Operation

Significant forces were deployed for the search operation. Several dozen police officers and firefighters were involved, using tracking dogs and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). First, the woman who reported the incident was found, which helped narrow down the search area. Shortly afterward, services reached the other two individuals.

Casualties and Hospitalization

The 57-year-old woman was resuscitated, but her life could not be saved. The 30-year-old woman and 35-year-old man were transported to the hospital.

It was reported that all three individuals were under the influence of alcohol. At the scene, police conducted further proceedings under the supervision of a prosecutor.

Official Statement

“On Saturday, January 31, in the evening hours, an alert was announced at the Warsaw West County Police Station. The reason was information about the disappearance of three adults – two women and a man – who, during a walk in the forest complex, lost their orientation and were unable to independently find their way back.”

“Immediate search operations were launched in Kampinos National Park with significant resources and means: police officers from the county station, a handler with a tracking dog, officers from the Warsaw Prevention Police Department, as well as firefighters from State and Volunteer Fire Brigades. Medical rescue teams were also dispatched to the location.”

“Despite the very rapid response of the services, the short time from the report to finding the missing persons, and intensive rescue operations and resuscitation procedures, the life of the older woman could not be saved. The man with symptoms of severe hypothermia was transported to the hospital where he received specialized medical assistance.”

Safety Warning

“Due to ongoing frosts and significant cooling, we appeal for particular caution when staying in forest areas and open spaces, especially after dark. Low temperatures, wind, and limited visibility can lead to hypothermia, loss of orientation, and threat to life in a very short time.”

“We remind you: before going into the field, check the weather forecast and adjust your plans to prevailing conditions; always inform loved ones where we are going and when we plan to return; bring a charged phone, flashlight, and appropriate warm clothing; avoid solitary walks in forests and on unfamiliar trails; in case of getting lost or threat to health and life, immediately call the emergency number 112.”

“Every report is treated as a priority, but the most important thing is to prevent situations that may end in tragedy. Let’s take care of our own safety and react when we see people exposed to hypothermia” – informs the Capital City Police.”
