Will Trump end the war in Ukraine?
In a poll carried out by SW Research for Onet, 49.8 % of respondents said that President Donald Trump will not bring the conflict in Ukraine to an; only 24.4 % answered “yes.” Thirty‑two percent were undecided or found it hard to judge. The study, completed on 19–20 August using CAWI, surveyed 823 people.
Poles are evidently skeptical about the effectiveness of Putin’s talks with Zelensky, the threat of sanctions, and new arms deliveries. “This is a clear signal that society does not largely believe in the decisive ability of the U.S. president, despite his intense diplomatic activity,” the portal summarises.
Negotiations on the Peace in Ukraine
On Friday, 15 August, Trump met with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, but no breakthrough was announced. On Monday the White House hosted talks involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders. The U.S. president took a break from the session to inform Putin by phone about the details.
However, doubts are mounting about a direct meeting between the Russian leader and the Ukrainian president. Although the White House has promised to arrange a meeting, signals from the Kremlin are ambiguous, and experts are growing more skeptical of Putin’s willingness to meet with Zelensky. Recent leaks from Washington suggest that Trump intends to temporarily curb his engagement in arranging a meeting between Zelensky and Putin. The Kremlin still stands by its demands for Ukraine, including the return of the entire Donbas region to Russia, which Kyiv cannot accept. Russia also resents Western security guarantees promised to Ukraine.
Trump, who announced a plan to stage a meeting, said on Thursday (21 August) that “in two weeks” there would be an answer about the next steps toward peace in Ukraine. He added that if there is no progress, he might need to adopt what he called an “alternative tactic.”
