Poland’s GDP per capita now rivals Western European nations, yet actual financial wealth reveals a different economic reality.
Poland’s Economic Position in Europe
Comparisons of Poland with Western countries are becoming increasingly common, suggesting that we should be treated more as citizens of the West than the East. In terms of GDP per capita, we still lag significantly behind the EU average, but there are countries that seemed like oases of prosperity just two to three decades ago.
It’s no wonder that after joining the European Union, hundreds of thousands of people moved to the United Kingdom. Now the British are wondering how it’s possible that in terms of ‘GDP’, Poland – per capita, still adjusted for price differences – is now essentially where they are.
The Reality of Wealth Disparity
But there are also statistics in which we still perform poorly. And little suggests that anything is likely to change significantly. This is the case with actual wealth, which is illustrated by data on financial assets.
