Warsaw Prosecutor Takes Over Investigation into Insurance Fraud “Smash and Grabs”

Warsaw’s Regional Prosecutor’s Office has taken over an investigation into organized insurance fraud involving staged traffic accidents.

Investigation Transfer

The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw has taken over an investigation from the Warsaw-Ochota District Prosecutor’s Office concerning property damage to various insurance companies through misleading information about accident circumstances and embezzling money from insurance contracts, under Art. 286 § 1 of the Penal Code.

The investigation has been entrusted to the Investigation-Department of the Metropolitan Police Headquarters.

Modus Operandi

According to current findings, suspects registered cars in their names that were subsequently used to cause accidents forming the basis for undeserved compensation payments. Between early 2020 and present, the suspected individuals participated in 65 road incidents across various Polish cities.

The method involved targeting critical locations like roundabouts or intersections where drivers might not exercise proper caution, intentionally causing collisions. Damages were covered by the perpetrators’ insurance policies. In many cases, according to insurance companies, these were identical damages, slightly worsened through subsequent incidents.

Ongoing Investigation

Police are currently working to identify all traffic accidents involving the suspected individuals.

The Warsaw Regional Prosecutor’s Office has urged anyone who was involved in such an incident and paid money to these individuals to report to their nearest police station to file a notification or provide explanations.
