Iustitia Reveals Strategy in KRS Standoff

Iustitia challenges government plans for Poland’s judicial council amid presidential resistance to judicial selection reforms.

Government’s Plan A Faces Obstacles

The government’s primary plan to resolve the KRS crisis remains President Duda signing a bill allowing judges to elect 15 members of the council. However, the bill’s requirements, such as a tenure clause eliminating most “neo-judges” from candidacy, are unacceptable to the President, as indicated by KPRP head Zbigniew Bogucki before the Sejm’s vote.

Elections Delay Legal Overhaul

The rushed legislative process stemmed from the KRS election calendar. Without new elections, current members remain in place. The President is expected to use all 21 days to sign or veto the bill, further delaying the alternative plan—elections by judges—which would require only Sejm approval.
