Poland Weighs Making Health Education Compulsory in Schools

Education Minister Barbara Nowacka considers mandatory health classes by March end after replacing family life education.

Current Status of Health Education

Health education has replaced family life education in Polish schools. Despite initial ministry announcements, the subject remains optional this school year.

Minister’s Decision Timeline

Minister Nowacka stated a decision must be made by the end of March to allow teachers and school directors adequate preparation time. She expressed openness to all solutions while consulting with parents, teachers, youth, and medical organizations.

Sexual Health Component Debate

The minister highlighted the challenge of ensuring peace while providing comprehensive knowledge about sexual health, which she described as an essential component of overall health. Advanced discussions are underway with organizations like SOS for Education to find a beneficial compromise for children.

Coalition’s Appeal to Government

The SOS for Education coalition appealed to Prime Minister Donald Tusk to implement compulsory health education in schools. The coalition, representing over 40 organizations, proposed a compromise where sexual education would remain optional while general health education becomes mandatory.

Curriculum Structure

Health education is currently taught in primary schools grades IV-VIII (one hour weekly per class, with grade VIII classes only in the first semester) and secondary schools (one hour weekly for two years).

Parental Opt-Out Process

Parents wishing to exempt their children from health education must submit a written resignation to the school director. Full students must submit the request themselves. (PAP)
