Firefighters who first responded to a deadly A1 highway crash where a family of three perished testified in court about the dramatic rescue efforts.
Firefighters Testify in Court
Firefighters from the Volunteer Fire Department in Srocka were the first emergency responders to arrive at the scene of the tragic accident on Highway A1. Their testimonies were heard in court on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, becoming a key element in the trial of Sebastian M., who is accused of causing the incident that claimed the lives of a family from the Silesian region.
The Tragedy at 315 km/h
The accident occurred in September 2023. According to prosecutorial findings, Sebastian M. was driving his BMW at speeds reaching 315 km/h on the highway. This excessive speed appears to be confirmed by recordings from other road users. At one point, investigators determined, Sebastian M. lost control of his vehicle, swerved onto another lane, and crashed into a Kia carrying a family from Myszków – a married couple with their five-year-old son. The car burst into flames.
Battle Against Time and Flames
The first emergency responders were volunteer firefighters from Srocka. The team commander, testifying in court, described the extent of the damage and the dramatic conditions of the operation. After extinguishing the fire, rescuers discovered the bodies of three victims inside the vehicle – the man in the driver’s seat and the woman and child on the backseat. The firefighter’s testimony indicated that other drivers had previously attempted to extract the family from the burning vehicle without success – the fire and blocked doors prevented effective assistance.
Defense Strategy Shifts Blame
Significantly, it was Sebastian M.’s defense that requested the firefighters’ testimonies. In recent hearings, they have been trying to demonstrate that the accused is not responsible for the accident, suggesting instead that a technical failure of the Kia, which was allegedly traveling at high speed on an acceleration lane, might have caused the tragedy. This defense strategy attempts to shift blame for the accident and the family’s death onto the deceased driver of the vehicle. In this context, the defense attorney asked whether the accident scene was properly secured and whether traffic on the highway was quickly halted.
Public Debate Over Punishment
The trial of the tragic accident continues, with recent hearings showing that tension is rising and the defense strategy is becoming increasingly confrontational. The victims’ families and the public are closely following the proceedings, which could result in up to eight years in prison for Sebastian M. Public opinion is emerging that Sebastian M.’s responsibility should be assessed much more severely than current legal provisions allow. It is pointed out that possible criminal penalties are disproportionate to the scale of the tragedy and the degree of threat that, in commentators’ opinions, the driver’s behavior posed. This belief strengthens the feeling that existing regulations are not keeping up with societal expectations for justice in cases of extremely dangerous driving.
