Polish Prime Minister Morawiecki accuses Sejm Marshal Czarzasty of Russian connections, sparking a heated parliamentary exchange with counter-accusations.
Parliamentary Confrontation Over Russian Allegations
During a parliamentary session on February 10, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki thundered from the lectern, submitting a proposal on behalf of the PiS club for a closed session regarding alleged Russian connections of Sejm Marshal Włodzimierz Czarzasty. Morawiecki claimed the Marshal allowed Moscow capital into a business directly linked to him and refused to answer security questions.
In response, Czarzasty informed that on February 9, the Sejm Presidency had rejected the proposal. “Down with communism” chanted PiS MPs as the Marshal announced a minute of recess.
Counter-Allegations Against Nawrocki
Left MP Tomasz Trela defended Czarzasty, suggesting Prime Minister Morawiecki should explain his own interests in land deals and the Government Agency for Strategic Reserves. Trela accused President Karol Nawrocki of having connections with “pseudo-fans and mafias from Pomerania” and questioned his activities regarding the Grand Hotel.
“The Marshal Czarzasty is clean, and Karol Nawrocki has dirty hands,” Trela declared, suggesting Nawrocki should explain his visit to Putin’s Russia.
Russian Connections Alleged
Head of the President’s Office of International Policy Marcin Przydacz reported disturbing media claims about Włodzimierz Czarzasty’s alleged contacts with Russian businesswoman Swietłana Czestnych, who is said to be connected with Russian decision-making centers.
Right-wing media outlets have described business relations between the Sejm marshal’s wife and a Russian citizen operating in the art market, allegedly connected with financial institutions controlled by the Kremlin. The Russian citizen reportedly has shares in a hotel company where Małgorzata Czarzasty serves as vice-president.
Official Response
The Chancellery of the Sejm emphasized that the marshal is covered by comprehensive counter-intelligence protection and has access to top secret information, stating that appropriate services would have reacted if there were any threats.
President Karol Nawrocki confirmed that the National Security Council scheduled for February 11 would include a point regarding state actions to clarify all circumstances of Czarzasty’s eastern social and business contacts.
