The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw has welcomed nearly 600,000 visitors since its new headquarters opened last October, as its current exhibition approaches its final days and transitions to a revised layout.
Exhibition Closures and Revisions
The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, which relocated to its new headquarters at the end of October 2024, has already been visited by almost 600,000 guests. The current exhibition, “4 × Collection,” will remain fully accessible until the end of August. From September 2 to October 5, it will be available only in the first-floor galleries. Since its opening on February 21, the exhibition has drawn over 180,000 visitors. This change marks the beginning of a new season, with a revised fall exhibition program incorporating performative and educational activities.
A Cultural Hub for Warsaw
“Since its opening, the Museum of Modern Art has set popularity records. It attracts visitors through its outstanding architecture and program. This clearly shows Warsaw needed a space for contemporary artists and performative actions that reflect social life. For the city, the museum is also crucial, as its building draws tourists and complements Warsaw’s evolving architectural landscape,” says Aldona Machnowska-Góra, deputy mayor of the capital.
Year-Round Educational and Community Engagement
Of its diverse offerings, the museum also provides educational workshops for people of all ages. During the summer, it participates in the “Summer in the City” program. Throughout the year, it hosts school events and family-friendly weekend activities. The Kinomuzeum (Cinema Museum) expands its reach during the summer, screening independent, documentary, and art-related films, as well as rare theatrical performances and musicals. Educational and research activities are further supported by a library and restaurant within the museum complex.
MSN’s Mission and Collaborations
As the museum marks its first anniversary in the new building, its director, Joanna Mytkowska, notes: “This has been an intense year, learning the potential of a new museum. The arrival of the building on Marszałkowska Street’s Central Square sparked great emotion. While Warsaw sees many new museums built in similar architectural styles, MSN remains central to national debates about modernity. How modern do we want to be? What aspects of modernity do we resist? How tolerant and open can we be? Where do we draw the boundaries of our community? Through art that reflects contemporary rhythms, these questions can be explored thoughtfully and deeply.”
History and Institutional Context
Established in 2005, the Museum of Modern Art moved to its new headquarters at ul. Marszałkowska 103 in central Warsaw in October 2024. It presents Polish art of the 20th and 21st centuries in an international context, curating visual arts, film, theater, and music. The museum also develops its collection and engages in educational and research initiatives.
Partnership and Accessibility
Since January 1, the Museum of Modern Art has been jointly managed by the Warsaw City Office and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Detailed information about the museum can be found on its official website.
