Poland’s direct borrowing for military funding has sparked political turmoil, contrasting with previous EU-backed loans.

Military Borrowing Continues

Borrowing for military purposes is nothing new, as Poland has been doing so at an accelerated rate since 2022. The only difference is that the country now borrows independently rather than through the European Union.

The amount of various loans for military equipment taken through the Support Fund for the Armed Forces has exceeded 300 billion złoty during this period.

Silent on Currency Risks

Until now, this debt has not been a major concern, nor has there been debate over the exchange rate differences when taking loans in euros, dollars, Swedish or Norwegian crowns.
