Hungarian Opposition Leader Invites US Secretary of State, Receives Him…Orban

Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar invites US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Budapest for October 23 event, to be received by Anita Orban.

Opposition leader Péter Magyar welcomed the visit of a top diplomat from a key Hungarian ally. “It is always good news when a leading diplomat from one of Hungary’s most important allies visits our country,” he stated on X.

Magyar, leader of the TISZA party, announced a warm welcome for US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Budapest on October 23, the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian revolution. He clarified that Rubio will be received by “a person named Orban,” referring to Anita Orban, TISZA’s candidate for foreign minister. “Our commitment to strengthening Hungarian-American relations remains unchanged,” Magyar assured.

Orban on US-Hungary Relations

Viktor Orban met with Marco Rubio in Budapest on Monday. The Hungarian prime minister declared a “new golden age” in US-Hungary relations, stating he cannot recall such a high, balanced, and friendly level in his over 30 years in politics.

Orban credited the current US president with doing the most in international policy to ensure peace in the Russian-Ukrainian war. He argued that if Donald Trump were president, the war would never have started, and without him now, there would be no chance for peace.

Rubio on Hungarian Elections

Marco Rubio emphasized entering a “golden era” in bilateral relations due to the Hungarian prime minister’s close ties with US President Donald Trump, noting this relationship has deepened during Trump’s second term.

Regarding Hungarian elections, Rubio repeated that Trump has “extremely close relations” with Viktor Orban, which has brought tangible benefits to US-Hungary ties. He declined to speculate on the future, stating, “What happens in this country depends on the voters who decide, and we love the Hungarian nation.”
