Warsaw court reissues European Arrest Warrant for Marcin Romanowski after initial warrant was revoked due to his political asylum in Hungary.
European Arrest Warrant Reissued
On Wednesday, February 18, the Warsaw Regional Court reissued a European Arrest Warrant for Marcin Romanowski. The first warrant was issued in December 2024, but a year later Judge Dariusz Łubowski revoked it, questioning its validity in light of Romanowski obtaining political asylum in Hungary.
The National Prosecutor’s Office disagreed with this decision and submitted a new application to the court, which again was assigned to Judge Łubowski. Investigators then requested his exclusion from the case, and after his exclusion, the application was assigned by lot to Judge Izabela Ledzion.
Political Reactions
Romanowski commented on the court’s decision on the X platform, stating: “The organized criminal group of Tusk and Żurek in the prosecutor’s office and Warsaw Regional Court continues its criminal activities. This is obvious illegality and a crime under Art. 231. Further legal steps soon.”
Ziobro also responded, stating: “This is further evidence that an organized criminal group operates today in the leadership of the Warsaw Regional Court, knowingly committing prohibited acts in line with the political expectations of Prime Minister Donald Tusk.”
Background on the Case
Marcin Romanowski is suspected of committing 19 crimes related to irregularities in the Justice Fund. Despite obtaining political asylum in Hungary in December 2024, the European Arrest Warrant enables the search for suspects within the European Union.
Similar proceedings are underway against Zbigniew Ziobro, who also obtained political asylum in Hungary. The Polish prosecutor’s office wants to charge him with 26 crimes, including leading an organized criminal group.
Legal Developments
The Warsaw Regional Court is also considering an application from the National Prosecutor’s Office for a European Arrest Warrant for Zbigniew Ziobro, which has also been assigned to Judge Dariusz Łubowski.
Judge Katarzyna Stasiów must by Friday, February 20, consider the application from the National Prosecutor’s Office for the exclusion of Judge Łubowski from issuing the ENA for the former minister of justice.
