At least 15 people, including journalists and medics, were killed in Israeli attacks on a Gazan hospital, according to Reuters. Witnesses report a second strike occurred as aid workers and reporters rushed to the scene of the first.
Israeli Attack on Gaza Hospital
Initial Strike
Reuters reports that the first attack on the hospital killed a cameraman working with the agency. A second strike reportedly injured a photographer and claimed the life of an Associated Press journalist. Witnesses state the second attack happened as rescuers, reporters, and others hurried to the site of the first strike, according to the agency.
Israeli Bombardments
Israel’s army announced on Sunday it has resumed combat operations at the edges of Gaza, intensively bombing northern and eastern districts of the city. Residents report homes and roads being destroyed, with some civilians fleeing in panic. Israel’s military stated the aim of the operation in Jabalya is to dismantle Hamas tunnels and prevent terrorists from returning. Defense Minister Israel Katz warned the Gaza offensive will continue, and the city will be “levelled” if Hamas does not end the war and free hostages, according to reports. The current invasion began after a Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, which killed 1,200 people and abducted 250 hostages. Since then, over 62,000 Palestinians have died.
Famine Crisis in the Gaza Strip
The UN and humanitarian organizations have warned of a famine in Gaza, which Israel disputes. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, 289 people have already died from malnutrition and starvation, including 115 children. The ongoing Israeli invasion follows the 2023 Hamas attack.
