Polish General Defends SAFE Program Against Opposition Criticism

General Marek Dukaczewski questions opposition’s sudden criticism of SAFE program, citing their previous support for military strengthening.

General Questions Opposition Stance

General Marek Dukaczewski expressed confusion about why the opposition is aggressively criticizing the SAFE program, noting that representatives of the “opposition of December 13” had previously been absolutely in favor of strengthening the military and investing in Polish defense industry.

He highlighted that even during the United Right government, loans were taken for purchasing armaments, including “twice as expensive ones in Korea.” The general emphasized that the Korean loan had 6.5% interest, while the EU credit will be repaid in 10 years with 3% interest, calling it “very beneficial.”

Benefits for Polish Defense Industry

General Dukaczewski pointed out that Poland is aware of having Polish products that are and will be attractive on the market. The SAFE program funding will strengthen production, allowing Polish companies to potentially start repaying the debt from products sold to other customers within the decade.

In his assessment, Polish companies could become competitors to others, with new competition emerging in Poland that would supply not only Polish armed forces but also offer products to military forces across Europe.

SAFE Program Details

The SAFE program is a European Union financial instrument designed to financially support defensive investments in member states. Poland is set to receive nearly 44 million euros, the most among all member states.

The program provides very favorable financial conditions: low-interest loans with a 10-year payment deferral and a 45-year repayment period. According to its provisions, over 80% of the funds are to go to Polish companies to strengthen domestic industry and new technologies.

Political Controversy

On February 13, the Sejm passed the law regarding SAFE. Politicians from Law and Justice (PiS) voted against the bill, having criticized the program from the beginning.

Donald Tusk commented that there is an unnecessary, harmful, and unwise political confrontation between his party and the opposition and President Nawrocki regarding SAFE. He stated that opponents want to overturn the project, similar to how they handled European Funds years ago, calling it an attempt to destabilize Europe and limit Poland’s role in the EU.
