Sikorski’s Criticism
Radosław Sikorski posted on social media that Poland’s “psychoright” considers a 6% interest loan for foreign tanks “patriotic” but deems a 3% loan for domestically produced equipment “treasonous”. He challenged president Karol Nawrocki to explain this to Belma and Nitrochem employees.
Opposition Concerns
The opposition opposes the SAFE program, citing conditional loan terms, inadequate corruption safeguards, and no legal guarantees EU funds will go to Polish defense firms. The government insists conditions focus on anti-corruption measures and cites Huta Stalowa Wola as a beneficiary.
SAFE Program Details
SAFE aims to equip and modernize Poland’s military, valued at €150 billion. Poland expects €44 billion in interest-free loans. Senate committees have approved an amendment ensuring funds don’t come from the national defense budget. Poland plans over 130 projects, including drones, air defense, and cybersecurity initiatives.
