Poznan Man Admits to Stabbing Wife Dozens of Times; Case Dismissed

A Poznan man who admitted to stabbing his wife dozens of times had his case dismissed after experts found him not criminally responsible.

Murder in Poznan

The tragedy occurred early on August 21, 2024, on the Batoregy housing estate in Poznan. 58-year-old Zbigniew G. allegedly stabbed his wife Małgorzata G. 57 times. The woman died.

The man was arrested and confessed to the crime. He claimed to regret what happened but could not explain why he decided to take such a step. Earlier, the spouses had reportedly argued.

Experts determined that at the time of the incident, Zbigniew G. had significantly diminished mental capacity. It is known that shortly before the incident, the man had a psychiatric consultation, and an episode of depression was diagnosed.

Court Dismisses Case

The indictment was submitted to the District Court in Poznan in January 2025. On Friday, after more than a year, the District Court in Poznan dismissed the criminal proceedings and referred the man to outpatient therapy.

In making this decision, the court relied on expert opinions, which during the trial indicated that the accused, Zbigniew G., had “disruptions of mental functions” and confirmed that the incapacity was significant.

Experts also assessed that there was no danger of the man committing a similar act in the future.

Appeal Expected

The verdict is not final. The prosecutor demanded a 20-year prison sentence, and everything indicates that, in connection with this, the case will go to a second-instance court.

Zbigniew G.’s children emphasized before the court that the man was a good father and did not show aggression.
