Ostrołęka court upholds two-year prison sentence for Piotr R. who caused fatal car accident in Rzekuń.

Elżbieta Edyta Łukasiewicz, “The Ostrołęka District Court changed the verdict and imposed a 2-year imprisonment sentence on the accused, leaving the rest of the verdict unchanged.”
Legal Proceedings
The proceedings before the Ostrołęka District Court concerned appeals filed by the accused’s defender and the auxiliary prosecutor’s representative. The court issued its decision on February 23, 2026, modifying the penalty imposed on Piotr R. while leaving other elements of the verdict unchanged.
In his appeal, Piotr R.’s defender requested a lighter sentence, proposing a change to 6 months imprisonment with conditional suspension for 3 years, reducing the driving ban to 3 years, and lowering compensation to 50,000 złoty.
Prosecutor’s Demands
The auxiliary prosecutor’s representative, in contrast, demanded a much harsher penalty. Original Verdict
Piotr R. was previously sentenced by the Ostrołęka Regional Court on May 14, 2025. The case concerned an incident on June 13, 2023, around 00:05, in Rzekuń.
According to the description, Piotr R., driving a Maserati car, was traveling from Ostrołęka toward Czerwin outside the built-up area with a speed limit of 90 km/h. On a left-hand curve, he failed to adjust his speed and driving technique to the conditions, lost control of the vehicle, crossed into the opposite lane and collided with a Hyundai Tucson traveling in the opposite direction.
As a result of the accident, the Hyundai driver Andrzej L. sustained injuries that resulted in his death. The Hyundai passenger, Aneta L., sustained injuries causing impairment of body functions for more than 7 days.
Initial Conviction
The Ostrołęka Regional Court found Piotr R. guilty of a qualified offense under, inter alia, Article 177 §2 of the Criminal Code and Article 177 §1 of the Criminal Code in conjunction with Article 11 §2 of the Criminal Code, and sentenced him to 2 years and 6 months imprisonment and a 6-year ban on driving any motor vehicles. The communication also indicated that a total amount of 180,000 zł was awarded to Aneta L. as compensation.
The Prosecutor’s Office noted that the first-instance court’s decision was evaluated positively. As stated in the communication, “The verdict was assessed by the public prosecutor as just.”
