A 47-year-old man struck a victim three times with his car in Krakow, after which he faces life imprisonment charges.
Initial Incident Looked Like Accident
The incident occurred on February 23 at approximately 11 PM in front of one of the hotels in Krakow’s Dębniki district. Services were notified about a man lying on the ground, a victim of a hit-and-run. Witnesses provided first aid, after which the victim was taken to the hospital by ambulance, where he underwent life-saving surgery. Initially, the case appeared to be a traffic accident. However, Krakow police determined that the driver’s actions were intentional.
Three Separate Collisions with Victim
Based on witness accounts and surveillance footage, police established that the perpetrator and victim knew each other. A dispute occurred directly before the incident. Investigators found that the 47-year-old first deliberately ran over the man and drove away. After about fifteen minutes, he returned to the hotel area and, seeing the man standing on the sidewalk, deliberately drove into him at high speed. He then left, only to return shortly after and run over the victim again with the vehicle. The driver got out of the car, approached the injured man, and began to drag him. The perpetrator’s 38-year-old brother was also in the car and, as determined, provided no assistance to the victim. Both men left the scene of the incident.
Arrest in Hotel on Azory Estate
The car used in the crime was found abandoned several kilometers from the scene of the incident. On February 24, police located the suspects. The brothers were hiding in a hotel on the Azory estate. Due to the brutal nature of the act and their previous conflicts with the law, the arrest was carried out with special precautions. Officers from the criminal and narcotics departments of the Krakow Municipal Police and police officers from the Krakow Provincial Police Headquarters participated in the operation.
Charges and Arrest
The 47-year-old Krakow resident was charged with attempted murder. He faces life imprisonment. The District Court for Krakow-Podgórze applied a three-month pre-trial detention against him. His 38-year-old brother will be held accountable for failing to provide assistance to a person in direct danger of losing their life or health. He faces up to three years in prison. The prosecutor applied a police supervision, a ban on leaving the country, and a ban on contacting the victim against him.
