A 39-year-old man died during a police intervention in Bytom after charging officers with sabers, forcing them to use their weapons.
The Incident
The incident occurred on Monday (March 2). Police from Bytom received a call from a concerned family member who feared for their relative’s life. They had not been in contact since December. Upon arriving at the indicated address, no one opened the door, so firefighters present at the scene forced entry.
Police Response
After entering the apartment, an aggressive and agitated 39-year-old rushed at the officers. Dressed in a winter jacket and holding a saber in his hand, he threatened to use it, then barricaded himself in the apartment. Police arrived at the scene and conducted negotiations with the man for over two hours.
Aftermath
Later, counter-terrorists forcefully entered the apartment. During the intervention, the aggressor rushed at the police with two sabers. As he was highly agitated and did not respond to orders to discard dangerous tools, in a situation of direct threat to life and health, police were forced to use their service weapons. The injured 39-year-old was handed over to a medical rescue team. He was taken to a hospital, where despite receiving assistance, he died after a few hours. Proceedings in this case are being conducted under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office.
