Famous Prosecutor Takes on New Task. Wrzosek: Better Get Used to Duzgunce

Poland’s Justice Ministry has assigned Prosecutor Ewa Wrzosek to a new role as general counsel in the minister’s office, emphasizing her responsibility for legal cooperation with the National Prosecutor’s Office. Wrzosek also warned critics not to dwell on “Duzgunce,” while Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek criticized the legitimacy of the neo-KRS structure.

Prosecutor Ewa Wrzosek in the Ministry of Justice

On August 26, the Justice Ministry announced that Prosecutor Ewa Wrzosek has been delegated to the Ministry of Justice. “She has assumed the position of general counsel in the minister’s office,” the statement said. Wrzosek will be responsible for “current, substantive cooperation on behalf of the Minister of Justice and the Prosecutor General with the National Prosecutor’s Office.” She will also present recommendations “regarding matters related to the activities of the Prosecutor General.”

Comment from Prosecutor Ewa Wrzosek

“I thank everyone for their wishes and congratulations regarding my appointment as general counsel in the office of the Minister of Justice, Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek. For many years, we have shared the same goal and determination in restoring the rule of law to citizens,” Wrzosek commented on assuming her new role. “We will not disappoint. As for those whose day has been ruined by today’s news… Better get used to it,” she added.

Waldemar Żurek Speaks Out on neo-KRS

On August 26, the Justice Ministry posted a statement on its X account detailing Waldemar Żurek’s comments about the so-called neo-KRS. “Today, I did not participate in the neo-KRS, i.e., the improperly constituted National Council of the Judiciary. Legally, the Ministry of Justice, the President’s representative, NSA chairman, and parliamentarians, including MPs and senators, are part of it. However, the judicial part was chosen in violation of our Constitution and a series of rulings from Polish courts, the Supreme Court’s legal judges, the European Court of Justice, and the European Court of Human Rights,” Żurek stated. He noted that “the continued operation of this body in its current composition results in compensation claims that we, the taxpayers, bear. File a complaint against the neo-judge in the Supreme Court or the Supreme Administrative Court and you get compensation,” he added. “This comes from our budget. I cannot participate in this, and I urge all those seated there legally not to sign off on this farce,” he concluded.
