Polish MEP Grzegorz Braun failed to appear at the prosecutor’s office where he was to face charges for imprisoning Dr. Gizela Jagielska.
Charges Against Grzegorz Braun
Four of six charges against Braun concern an incident from April 2025 when he and his supporters stormed a hospital in Oleśnica and imprisoned Dr. Gizela Jagielska in her office. The doctor was targeted for performing a legal abortion in the ninth month of pregnancy. At the time, Braun was a candidate for President of Poland. The remaining charges relate to destroying an exhibition of photos from an equality march in Opole’s Market Square and making anti-Semitic remarks in a YouTube channel.
Previous Attempts to Avoid Questioning
The charges were first to be presented to Braun in January, but he submitted a medical certificate. On Tuesday, February 17, the politician appeared at the prosecutor’s office but the questioning did not proceed as Braun requested the recusal of prosecutor Karolina Stocka-Mycek from the case. The proceedings were suspended pending consideration of his request.
Prosecutor’s Response
“According to regulations, until this request is reviewed by a superior, the prosecutor cannot perform any actions against this person,” explained Stocka-Mycek in an interview with “Wyborcza.” The request was ultimately rejected, but Prosecutor Stocka-Mycek was delegated to the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Wrocław, and a new lead prosecutor was assigned to the case.
Latest Absence
For Wednesday, March 4, the prosecutor’s office planned another attempt to question the MEP and announce the charges. Braun did not appear at the prosecutor’s office. The day before, he submitted a justification stating it was due to his duties as an MEP and proposed alternative dates.
“From this justification, it appears that due to obligations related to his mandate as an MEP, Mr. Grzegorz Braun cannot appear at the prosecutor’s office today,” explained Damian Pownuk, spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Wrocław, quoted by “Wyborcza.” – At the same time, he indicated in which dates he could appear.”
