NATO Responds to Missile Attack; Turkey Was Not Target

NATO reaffirms strong defense amid Iranian missile intercepted near Turkish airspace in eastern Mediterranean.

NATO Statement on Iranian Attacks

Our deterrence and defense remain strong in all areas, including air and missile defense, said a NATO spokesperson. Hart emphasized that NATO stands in solidarity with all its allies, including Turkey, in the face of Iranian attacks on countries in the region.

Turkey Intercepts Iranian Missile

Turkey’s Ministry of Defense announced that on Wednesday, a ballistic missile launched from Iran was intercepted as it was heading toward Turkish airspace. The missile was destroyed by NATO’s air defense over the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Missile’s Intended Target Unclear

A Turkish official told AFP that Turkey “was not the target” of the Iranian missile. “We believe it was heading to a military base in Cyprus but went off course,” the official added.

Iran’s Regional Response

In response to attacks by Israel and the United States that began on Saturday, Iran is attacking Middle Eastern countries using ballistic missiles and drones. Targets include American bases and civilian objects. The incident involving Turkey marks the first threat to NATO territory in this conflict.
