Denmark has accused at least three Americans of conducting covert influence operations in Greenland to assess resident support for a potential U.S. takeover, calling it a breach of international norms.
Secret Influence Operations
At least three Americans had been conducting secret influence operations in Greenland. This involved gathering information on the island’s residents who might support a U.S. takeover. “This is obviously entirely unacceptable,” commented the head of Danish diplomacy.
Violation of All Principles
“Participation in a campaign of influence, if sanctioned, would be a violation of all international principles,” added Lars Lokke Rasmussen. He noted Danish authorities were aware foreign actors continued to show interest in Greenland and its position within the Kingdom of Denmark. “It is not surprising, then, that in the near future we will face attempts to influence the Kingdom’s future,” stated the Danish foreign minister.
Trump’s Appetite for Greenland
Relations between Denmark and the U.S. have been tense since Donald Trump returned to the White House. Some even suggest hybrid warfare. Trump has expressed a desire to acquire Greenland due to its strategic location and wealth of natural resources and minerals, ruling out the use of force. Denmark pledges to resolutely defend its territorial sovereignty.
