Sikorski to journalist at press conference after Cabinet Council meeting: I hope you remember?

Polish Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz rejected the president’s veto on Starlink, while Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski emphasized its strategic importance for Poland’s interests and criticized nationalist ties to the American MAGA movement.

At a press conference following the Cabinet Council meeting on Wednesday (August 27), Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz addressed a journalist from TVN24 regarding remarks by Zbigniew Bogucki of the President’s Office. Kosiniak-Kamysz stated, “The government in the Starlink issue is using Russian propaganda.” He also clarified that the presidential veto did not target the Starlink program but served as a smokescreen, emphasizing its connection to Poland’s security. “Supporting Ukraine keeps Russia away from Poland, and we must do it with all our strength,” he added, highlighting consensus among responsible political figures despite some extreme views.

Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski echoed the same concerns, recalling the backlash in the NATO alliance and Ukraine when Elon Musk hinted the Starlink system could collapse if disconnected. He noted that during Ukraine’s counteroffensive in 2023, some terminals were indeed cut off. “You see how vital Starlink is,” Sikorski said. “It serves Poland’s strategic interests—first, to ensure Ukraine’s defense, and second, to influence post-war decisions. Our investment in Starlink is one of the most effective funds for Ukrainian support and Poland’s negotiation leverage. I find it hard to believe anyone could act to undermine this critical program.”

Preparations for Karol Nawrocki’s Upcoming U.S. Visit

A journalist from Radio ZET also asked about preparations for Karol Nawrocki’s visit to the United States. Sikorski referenced constitutional provisions, stating that the Council of Ministers manages foreign policy, while the president collaborates with the prime minister and foreign minister. “The president represents state policy and Poland’s stance as decided by the government,” he explained, adding that the Council had set clear guidelines for Nawrocki’s Washington visit. He emphasized the need for decisions on European matters, peace conditions in Ukraine, economic relations, and military cooperation with Poland’s largest ally, not just symbolic gestures.

Sikorski Criticizes Nawrocki’s Nationalist Ties

Sikorski later addressed a question from a reporter at Poland 24 about the fulfillment of promises made by politicians prior to the 2023 elections. He noted that the Cabinet Council discussed the issue, pointing out the president had made commitments in areas where he holds no authority. “In Poland, the president is not a prime minister,” Sikorski said. “He doesn’t govern but reigns. If leaders make promises they can’t fulfill, it might eventually be a shame to face the electorate.” He also criticized Nawrocki for establishing ideological ties with U.S. nationalists, including the MAGA movement.
