A Pentagon report reveals a US Army General overseeing security assistance to Ukraine experienced a concussion after heavy drinking and his team left classified maps on a Polish train.
Pentagon Report Details Incident
The Military Times portal analyzed a report from the Department of Defense Inspector General, covering the period from April to May 2024. General Antonio Aguto was then commanding the Security Assistance Group – Ukraine (SAG-U), based in Wiesbaden, Germany.
General Aguto’s Intoxication and Injury
According to the report, General Aguto consumed two and a half liters of Georgian brandy, with an alcohol content of 40-50%, during a dinner in Kyiv. He remained intoxicated the following day during official meetings, including one with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The investigation determined the commander fell to the ground at least three times, resulting in a concussion.
Classified Maps Left on Train
General Aguto’s team left military maps, marked “secret” and packaged in cylindrical containers, on a train during their return from Kyiv to Wiesbaden, Poland.
The maps were recovered the next day, with no indication of unauthorized access.
General Aguto’s Explanation
General Aguto accepted responsibility for the lost maps, despite not being directly responsible for physically carrying them. He also stated he received verbal permission from the US Army Europe commander to exceed the standard two-drink limit due to the “cultural significance” of drinking during formal dinners.
SAG-U Role and Transition
Antonio Aguto commanded SAG-U from 2022-2024, retiring in August 2024. The unit, established in 2022, played a key role in delivering and coordinating equipment to Ukraine. Following the 2024 NATO summit in Washington, its role was transferred to the Alliance.
