Finnish President Alexander Stubb reveals tensions with the U.S. after Donald Trump demanded NATO participation in a potential operation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump Demands NATO Involvement in Strait of Hormuz
Donald Trump has requested that the United Kingdom and other European NATO members participate in a military operation to open the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil transport.
The Strait of Hormuz has been blocked by Iran following U.S. and Israeli attacks on Tehran. Trump warned that NATO faces a “very bad future” if it does not comply.
European Allies Wary of U.S. Actions
European allies, particularly the United Kingdom, Germany, and France, are reportedly hesitant to assist President Trump in the Strait of Hormuz due to a lack of prior consultation regarding a potential attack on Iran, according to President Stubb.
Stubb indicated that the response from European nations would have been different had they been informed in advance of planned actions, including the expectation that “something big” would happen.
Shift in U.S. Approach to Middle East Operations
Stubb recalled that past U.S. operations in the Middle East (Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya) involved different approaches to cooperation with allies.
He stated, “Now the U.S. did not do that, and that is a big difference.”
U.S. Seeking to Utilize European Military Bases
According to Stubb, Trump’s statement suggests the U.S. would like to utilize military bases in European countries, questioning why it should if NATO does not offer assistance.
Stubb cautioned against drawing hasty conclusions from a single statement, emphasizing the need to “again try to convince the U.S. why it is important to stay in NATO and why Europe is important for America.”
Stubb’s Relationship with Trump
Following a golf game with Trump in Florida last spring and frequent contact regarding the peace process in Ukraine, Finnish President Stubb has been viewed as one of the European politicians with the best relationship with the U.S. leader.
