Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk affirmed Poland will not send troops to Iran, citing other NATO commitments amid escalating Middle East tensions.
Poland Will Not Send Troops to Iran
Prime Minister Tusk stated Poland will not deploy troops to Iran before Tuesday’s Council of Ministers meeting. He emphasized the conflict in the Middle East does not directly threaten Poland’s security.
Poland has other tasks within NATO, involving its land, air, and naval forces, which are currently being developed. The country’s maritime capabilities will prioritize the security of the Baltic Sea, a point understood by allies including the United States.
Escalating Conflict and Strait of Hormuz Blockade
The United States and Israel have been bombing Iran since February 28th, prompting retaliatory attacks by Iran against Israel and Persian Gulf states, targeting both American bases and civilian infrastructure. Iran has also blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil trade route, causing a sharp increase in global oil prices.
Trump Calls for International Support
U.S. President Donald Trump has renewed calls for other nations to join an operation to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, blocked by Iran. The U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Michael Waltz, stated Washington “demands” participation from other countries due to the resulting surge in global fuel prices.
NATO Skepticism and Allied Positions
NATO is skeptical of Trump’s plan. Japan and Australia have ruled out sending warships to the Strait of Hormuz. Trump believes France and potentially the United Kingdom may support Washington’s efforts to unblock the strait, but British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has ruled out involvement in a Middle East war. Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul excluded his country’s participation in a military operation in the Strait of Hormuz and expressed skepticism about expanding the Aspides mission to include it.
Polish Response to U.S. Request
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that Poland would consider a request from the United States to discuss protecting the Strait of Hormuz. However, President Karol Nawrocki has excluded the participation of the Polish Armed Forces in such an operation.
Reported Israeli Strikes
Israeli bombardments reportedly killed influential Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Laridjani and commander of the Basij paramilitary forces Gholamreza Solejmani.
