Tram Line to Gocław Gets Closer — Construction Project Documentation Contract Signed

Warsaw’s Tramwaje Warszawskie has signed a contract for the detailed design of the Gocław tram line, aiming to connect the 60,000 residents to the city center in about 20 minutes. The project is on track for administrative decisions in 2027, paving the way for future construction tenders.

Contract Signed for Detailed Design

Warsaw’s Tramwaje Warszawskie has signed a contract with a designer for the detailed documentation and materials required to obtain permits for the Gocław tram line. The 3.6-kilometer route will serve the 60,000-resident Gocław district, currently reliant solely on buses, and reduce travel time to the city center to approximately 20 minutes. Administrative decisions and documentation are planned for 2027, after which a construction tender may be announced.

President Highlights Benefits

Mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, emphasized the importance of expanding the tram network: “We are consistently building new tram sections to ensure most districts can use a quiet, safe, and convenient transportation method. Gocław, a large area connected to the city center and other districts only by buses, will benefit immensely from an alternative rail transport system. Additionally, the planned M3 subway line from Stadion Narodowy to Gocław will improve overall connectivity for Praga Południe.”

Key Contract Details

The contract was awarded to Databout, which submitted the most favorable bid of just over 9 million zł brutto. In 2026, the city expects to finalize the location decision for the rail line and submit applications to begin construction. If approved in 2027, a tender for building the new route could follow after securing funding, with the winner receiving all necessary documentation and materials to proceed.

Route Design Overview

The new tram line will branch from the existing route on Washington Avenue near the Exhibition Canal. Tracks will run along the canal, over Washington Avenue via a viaduct, and through the reserved “Millennium Route.” The line will continue along Bora-Komorowski Street to Gocław’s combined tram and bus stop.

Infrastructure and Green Spaces

The project includes six modular stops with 14 new platforms, a combined pedestrian-cycling tram bridge over the Exhibition Canal, three pedestrian-cycling footbridges, and a viaduct over the lowered section of Washington Avenue (Łazienkowska Route). Approximately 2.6 km of the new line will feature a green corridor with plans to plant at least 320 trees, nearly 7,000 ornamental shrubs (around 2,000 m²), and 6,660 grass plants (around 1,060 m²).

Coordination with Other Projects

Preparations for the tram line are synchronized with other city projects, including the reconstruction of the Washington Avenue tram route from Washington Circle to Wiatraczna Circle and the M3 subway line from Stadion Narodowy to Gocław. The subway and tram systems will intersect at the crossing of General Fieldorfa “Nila” Street and General Bora-Komorowski Street (Gocław Station, E06).
