Hungary Considers Military Aid to U.S. in Strait of Hormuz

Hungarian Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff Gulyás indicated Hungary would consider assisting the U.S. in the Strait of Hormuz if requested by President Trump.

Gulyás Responds to Government Position

Gulyás was questioned during a Thursday briefing (March 19th) about whether Hungary would provide assistance to the U.S. in the Strait of Hormuz if Donald Trump requested it. He responded that they would consider it, according to Hungarian media.

Opposition Leader Magyar Questions Motives

“Gulyás, in one sentence, undermined the government’s peaceful propaganda,” stated Tisza, leader of the opposition party Tisza, in a post on X. He questioned whether the potential U.S. aid request is the true reason for the upcoming visit of the American Vice President to Budapest.

Magyar called for Orbán to disclose whether he will negotiate the deployment of Hungarian soldiers to a war with Iran with the visiting U.S. Vice President.

U.S. Support for Orbán?

Reports suggest U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance may visit Budapest in the coming days to express support for Prime Minister Orbán ahead of April elections. Gulyás neither confirmed nor denied these reports during the Thursday briefing.

Tight Race Between Fidesz and Tisza

According to independent polls, Tisza is leading Fidesz. A February poll by Median showed Magyar’s party with a 20-point lead among decided voters. Hungarian elections are scheduled for April 12th.

Vice President’s Visit and Campaign Support

Reuters reports the U.S. Vice President is expected to visit Budapest. The rivalry between Fidesz and Tisza is intensifying, as detailed in an article on Wyborcza.pl questioning whether J.D. Vance will come to Hungary to provide campaign assistance to Orbán.
