Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, will visit several Eastern European countries, including Poland, to emphasize EU support for member states facing challenges along their borders with Russia and Belarus and to address European security and defense issues.
Ursula von der Leyen’s Foreign Visits
President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will visit Latvia, Finland, Estonia, Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria, and Romania in the coming days. The European Commission stated that her visit will highlight support for member states confronting challenges linked to borders with Russia or Belarus. She will also discuss European security and defense with national leaders and military officials. On Friday, von der Leyen will arrive in Riga to meet with Latvia’s Prime Minister Evika Šilinē. Later that day, she will travel to Helsinki for meetings with Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and President Sauli Niinistö. On Saturday, she will head to Estonia, where she will meet with Prime Minister Kristiina Ojuland among others.
Ursula von der Leyen in Poland
On Sunday, Ursula von der Leyen will visit Poland. She will hold talks with Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and both will jointly visit the Polish-Belarusian border. The same day, she will travel to Sofia to meet with Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Rosen Plachkov.
Situation at the Polish-Belarusian Border
According to a Thursday statement by the Border Guard, nearly 180 attempts to illegally cross the Polish-Belarusian border were thwarted on Wednesday. Migrants gathered in groups of dozens and attacked Polish patrols with stones and sticks embedded with nails, frustrated by the effective security measures at the border.
