The Natanz nuclear complex in central Iran was reportedly attacked Saturday morning by the United States and Israel, according to Iranian news agency Tasnim.

Natanz Nuclear Complex Targeted

The Iranian Organization for Atomic Energy reported that the United States and Israel attacked the Natanz nuclear complex in central Iran on Saturday morning. The report, published by the Tasnim news agency, stated there was no radioactive leak and no threat to nearby residents.

Iraqi Response: Drone Attack on Israel

Iranian media outlets reported that the Iranian army retaliated with drone attacks targeting fuel tanks for aircraft at Ben Gurion Airport in Israel.

Previous Attacks on Natanz

The Natanz facility was a key target during a 12-day conflict between the US and Israel and Iran in June of last year. It was also previously attacked when the current conflict began on February 28th. The extent of the damage from the latest bombing remains unknown.

Significance of the Natanz Facility

Located approximately 230 km south of Tehran, the Natanz complex is a central component of Iran’s nuclear program, used for uranium enrichment. It comprises several facilities, including a large underground enrichment plant and a pilot fuel enrichment facility.

Iran’s Nuclear Program and Western Concerns

Iran has long been accused by Western nations of pursuing nuclear weapons development. While Tehran maintains its program is solely for civilian energy purposes, it has significantly increased uranium enrichment to levels unsuitable for peaceful applications.

Uranium Enrichment Levels

The United Nations estimates Iran possesses around 440 kg of uranium enriched to 60 percent. Further enrichment to 90 percent could yield enough material for eight to ten nuclear weapons.
