Schetyna: Kaczyński Seeks Radical Voters; Coalition Faces Potential Dependence on Confederation

Senator Grzegorz Schetyna suggests Jarosław Kaczyński aims to attract voters from the Confederation parties, potentially forcing a coalition with them to maintain power.

Kaczyński’s Strategy and Confederation’s Future

Senator Grzegorz Schetyna of Civic Coalition (KO) stated that Jarosław Kaczyński, recognizing the growing support for Confederation and Konfederacja Korony Polskiej, is attempting to appeal to their radical voter base. He noted that these two groups often outperform PiS in polls.

Schetyna believes this move will weaken Confederation, as internal divisions exist within the party. He suggests a potential shift in the political landscape before the upcoming elections, particularly during the evening of the election results.

Potential Cooperation with KO

When questioned about potential cooperation with KO, Confederation’s Vice-Marshal of the Sejm, Krzysztof Bosak, indicated openness to all possibilities, stating it’s a standard practice for a politician to consider every scenario and have a plan.

Current Polling Data and Seat Projections

Recent polls indicate the ruling coalition lacks a majority in the Sejm. OGB polling shows 37.91% support for KO, 28.82% for PiS, 12.9% for Confederation, 9.04% for Konfederacja Korony Polskiej, and 5.3% for New Left.

According to political scientist Dr. Maciej Onasz from the University of Łódź, these results would translate to 203 seats for KO, 158 for PiS, 55 for Confederation, 38 for Konfederacja Korony Polskiej, and six for New Left. This would necessitate cooperation with Confederation for KO and New Left to retain power.

Tusk on a Coalition with Confederation

Prime Minister Donald Tusk described a potential coalition with Confederation as “exotic,” questioning the diverse ideologies within the party, citing figures like Braun, Mentzen, Bosak, and Wipler.

Tusk acknowledged some shared liberal economic views with Confederation, but expressed skepticism about forming such a coalition, suggesting Confederation shares the same sentiment.
