Women Write an Open Letter to the President: “Cold Political Calculation”
In response to Nawrocki’s veto, the “Open Letter from Polish Women” was published, addressing the president, the prime minister [https://wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/premier#anchorLink], the Sejm, and the Senate. The letter criticizes the decision and its accompanying rhetoric, which includes conditional aid for children based on parental employment, prolonged paths to citizenship, and reopening memory disputes. It states: “These actions are not emotional matters but cold political calculations. They harm Ukrainian women refugees, their children, the elderly, and sick. They also affect our schools, doctors, and local governments, bringing fear instead of certainty and the threat of family separation, secondary migration, and eroding trust in the Polish state.” The letter highlights that mothers who fled war zones with their children [https://www.edziecko.pl/edziecko/0,0.html#anchorLink] and ill parents now face uncertainty about where to go next. Signatories include Danuta Wałęsa, Jolanta Kwaśniewska, Anna Komorowska, Janina Ochojska, Olga Tokarczuk, Dominika Kulczyk, Agnieszka Holland, and Krystyna Janda.
