Braun Avoids Charges, Prosecutor Outlines Plan for Accountability

Grzegorz Braun appeared at the Wrocław prosecutor’s office but avoided charges, submitting a complaint against the investigating judge and requesting her recusal.

Braun’s Appearance and Protests

Grzegorz Braun appeared with his supporters as an anti-abortion picket, attended by around ten people, mainly seniors, began outside the prosecutor’s office. Protesters displayed a banner comparing the murder of Maksymilian Kolbe in Auschwitz to abortion.

Recusal Request and Suspension of Proceedings

Braun did not provide testimony but instead filed a complaint alleging misconduct by Judge Kopczyńska and requested her removal from the case. Following a statement to the media, Braun left the Wrocław prosecutor’s office, leading to a suspension of proceedings pending a review of his request. The prosecutor scheduled a break until 12:00 PM.

Prosecutor Rejects Recusal, Cites Obstruction

The prosecutor’s office announced in the afternoon that the request for recusal was rejected, stating it was a tactic to prolong the proceedings. The prosecutor emphasized the need for European Parliament’s consent to detain Braun, calling his actions a deliberate obstruction.

Incident in Oleśnica Hospital

The case stems from an incident in 2025, where Braun entered the Powiatowy Zespół Szpitali in Oleśnica on April 16th and attempted to obstruct gynecologist Gizela Jagielska’s work, claiming he was making a “citizen’s arrest.”

Jagielska stated that Braun entered the administrative section, blocked her path, and confined her to an administrative room, preventing her from accessing the hospital ward and subjecting her to abuse for approximately forty minutes. Braun referred to his actions as a “citizen’s arrest,” demanding Jagielska’s removal and police intervention.

Immunity Waiver and Investigation

An investigation was launched into Jagielska’s detention, with charges filed against other participants in the hospital action, including Marta Czech, a member of Braun’s party. The European Parliament revoked Braun’s immunity for a second time on November 13, 2025, enabling Polish authorities to press criminal charges against him.

Pending Charges Against Braun

The prosecutor intends to file six charges against Braun, four related to the Oleśnica hospital incident, one concerning a racist and antisemitic statement on YouTube, and another for damaging a photo exhibition at a pride march in Opole.

Previous Hearing and Continued Delays

A previous hearing was scheduled for February 17th, but Braun submitted a request to recuse prosecutor Karolina Stockiej-Mycek, leading to a suspension of proceedings. This request was rejected by the deputy district prosecutor, and further hearings were set for March 4th, which Braun did not attend, providing justification for his absence the previous day.
