A 42-year-old miner died Tuesday at the Jankowice coal mine in Rybnik, Poland, prompting expressions of sympathy from the President and Energy Minister.
Tragedy at Jankowice Mine
The incident occurred around 6:00 PM on Tuesday, March 24th, at the Jankowice mine. The miner was transported to a hospital in Rybnik with serious injuries but succumbed to them around 10:00 PM.
The 42-year-old leaves behind two children. The Polish Mining Group (PGG) stated that the family is receiving support from the mine and a psychologist, expressing their condolences.
President and Minister Offer Condolences
President Karol Nawrocki expressed deep sorrow over the tragic accident at the KWK ROW Ruch Jankowice mine in Rybnik, offering his sincere sympathy and solidarity to the family, loved ones, and the entire mining community.
Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka also conveyed his deepest condolences, stating he shared in the pain and grief of those affected.
Fatal Accident Statistics
This is the first fatal accident in a Polish hard coal mine this year and the third in the mining industry overall. Two previous fatalities occurred in open-pit mining, according to the State Mining Inspectorate.
There were 16 fatal accidents in the Polish mining industry in 2023, including twelve in hard coal mines.
