Woman, 43, Isolated for 27 Years: Court Considers Placement in Care

Mirella, a 43-year-old woman who has reportedly been secluded in her home in Świętochłowice, Poland, for 27 years, is at the center of a court case regarding her welfare.

Mirella’s Testimony and Circumstances

Mirella, accompanied by her father and legal representative, stated she feels well and wishes to remain at home, where she experiences no harm. The 43-year-old has not been seen by neighbors for 27 years and was allegedly “confined” to her room.

Calls for Placement in Social Care

Prosecutors and the Świętochłowice Social Welfare Center (OPS) are seeking Mirella’s placement in a care facility, citing concerns for her safety. They argue that conditions existed after December 2025 that meet the criteria outlined in the Mental Health Protection Act.

Closed-Door Hearing and Privacy Concerns

All parties involved supported the request to hold the hearing behind closed doors. Judge Andrzej Krawiec explained the decision was due to the sensitive nature of the case—involving private life and health information—and the need to protect Mirella’s privacy. Her legal representative also appealed to the media to respect her right to privacy.

The “Blue Card” and Social Services Involvement

A “Blue Card” has been issued regarding the family. Social workers had previously been denied access to the apartment.

Prosecutor’s Response to Mirella’s Wishes

Prosecutor Marcin Murias acknowledged Mirella’s desire to remain at home, stating the court must consider the participant’s position. He emphasized that placement in a care facility without consent constitutes a restriction of freedom, requiring thorough examination under the law, and that expert opinion will be crucial.

Further Investigation and Evidence Gathering

The court will make a final decision after a complete review of evidence, including Mirella’s living and health situation, expert opinions, and all collected documentation. The court may also decide to call witnesses.

Criminal Investigation into Potential Deprivation of Liberty

Alongside the request for placement, the Chorzów prosecutor’s office is investigating whether Mirella was unlawfully deprived of her freedom due to her health condition. The investigation also explores potential abuse, endangerment, and failure to provide assistance.

The investigation is under the supervision of the Katowice District Prosecutor’s Office.
