Austria Closes Airspace to US; Neutrality Prioritized

Austria and Spain have closed their airspace to US military flights related to the conflict with Iran, signaling growing European resistance to US actions.

US Transport Requests Denied

A spokesperson for the ministry stated that several requests from the US regarding transport have been received. On Monday, the Spanish government closed its airspace to military flights connected to the war with Iran.

Reports indicate Italy also refused landing permission to several US planes at a base in Sicily.

Spain Follows Austria’s Lead

Austria is not alone; two days prior, on March 30th, Spain announced it was closing its airspace to American aircraft involved in attacks on Iran. “We do not consent to the use of military bases or airspace for actions related to the war in Iran,” stated Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles on Monday.

Restrictions Extend to Allied Nations

The Spanish newspaper “El Pais,” citing military sources, reported that these restrictions also apply to US aircraft stationed in third-party countries, such as the United Kingdom and France.

Trump Considers NATO Withdrawal

US President Donald Trump stated in an interview published Wednesday with the British newspaper “The Telegraph” that he is seriously considering withdrawing the United States from NATO, calling the North Atlantic Alliance a “paper tiger.”

Growing European Opposition

European countries, including NATO allies, are demonstrating increasing resistance to US actions in the Middle East, leading to diplomatic tensions and denials of overflight permissions for aircraft involved in “Epic Fury.”

Trump Demands NATO Involvement in Ormuz Strait

Trump has repeatedly stated that NATO countries should militarily participate in blocking the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has been blocking movement in this crucial strait for oil and gas exports from the Persian Gulf countries for about a month, in retaliation for attacks by Israel and the US. European countries – with whom Trump did not consult before starting the war – largely believe the war is being waged by the US without a clear plan.
