Russian President Vladimir Putin is welcomed with full honors and a red carpet during his visit to China, which includes a participation in the two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. The summit, starting on Sunday, August 31 in the Chinese city of Tianjin, features key leaders from around the world, including the Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Putin’s First Major International Visit Since the Outbreak of the Ukraine War

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to China, which began on August 31 and will last until Wednesday, marks his first major international visit since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent Western sanctions.

Xi Jinping’s Expected Show of Support for Russia

Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to use the summit to showcase international relations without US dominance while offering support to Russia, despite the on-going sanctions related to the Ukraine invasion. Putin, in an interview with the Chinese agency Xinhua a day before the visit, criticized Western sanctions, stating that Moscow and Beijing jointly oppose ‘discriminatory’ limitations in global trade.
