Medvedev Accuses EU of Potential Military Alliance Against Russia

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned that the European Union could evolve into a hostile military alliance against Russia, criticizing European politicians.

Medvedev Warns of NATO Discord and EU Militarization

Dmitry Medvedev, cited by the Russian state news agency TASS, stated that significant contradictions exist within NATO, exacerbated by the “Iranian campaign.”

Medvedev threatened the European Union, asserting it “may quickly transform into a fully-fledged and extremely hostile military alliance.” He believes some European politicians, particularly in Brussels, are considering creating a full military component within the EU, altering the global balance of power.

Shift in Russian Rhetoric Towards EU Expansion

According to the Russian politician, Russia’s previous rhetoric regarding potential EU membership for neighboring countries was restrained. However, he now views the EU as potentially becoming a “full-fledged and extremely hostile military alliance against Russia, in some respects worse than NATO.”

“Obscene Gathering of Furious European Parasites”

Medvedev described a potential EU as “an obscene gathering of furious European parasites,” whose aim would be to gain political capital and money through fueling Russophobia. He urged abandoning a tolerant approach to the accession of militarily-economic EU neighbors.

Russia’s Stance on NATO and Neighboring Countries

It is noted that Medvedev’s statement lacks confirmation in Russia’s past actions and positions regarding NATO expansion and relations with neighboring countries. Russia has consistently opposed the expansion of Western structures towards its borders, particularly Ukraine’s potential NATO membership.

Russian officials, including Vladimir Putin, have linked potential peace talks to Ukraine abandoning its aspirations to join the Alliance.

Medvedev’s History of Criticism and Aggression

Dmitry Medvedev regularly criticizes the West and has previously attacked Poland with harsh words. He has frequently published confrontational posts on social media.

Last year, TASS reported, he “warned enemies of Russia” that failed negotiations regarding Ukraine could lead to “an even more terrible stage of the war with new participants and new weapons.”

In 2023, he attacked Poland in a social media post, questioning the value of diplomatic relations and using extremely aggressive language towards opponents of Russia, stating he saw “no point in maintaining diplomatic relations with Poland.”
